FAQs
Why is the City conducting this assessment?
The City of Tyler is gathering information about pedestrian accessibility in public rights-of-way and trails as part of the ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. This work will help the City better understand existing conditions, identify barriers to access, and inform future planning and prioritization.
Why robots?
The robots help collect accessibility information in a detailed and consistent way across a large area. They move at walking speed along pedestrian pathways and gather information on sidewalks and trails, curb ramps, signalized intersections, and transit stops.
Using this technology reduces the need for staff to collect the same information in or near traffic and helps the project team cover more ground in less time while creating a clearer record of existing conditions.
What information are you collecting?
Data collection is limited to pedestrian infrastructure and related accessibility features. This includes sidewalks and trails, curb ramps, signalized intersections, and transit stops. The information will help document existing conditions and identify barriers to access in the public right-of-way.
Is personal information being stored?
No. Data collection is limited to information related to pedestrian infrastructure, and no personal information is stored.
Are the robots safe around people and pets?
The robots are designed for shared public environments. They prioritize human safety and are designed to yield to people.
Why does a robot sometimes stop and stay in one place?
When a robot finishes a designated area of sidewalk, it may stop to upload data and wait for pickup. This is normal and does not indicate a problem with the unit.
Why is the City working on an ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan?
This work is a federal mandate under the ADA. Cities are required to complete and maintain an ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan. Completing this work helps the City of Tyler remain eligible to apply for important transportation and infrastructure funding that supports future improvements across the community.
