South Tyler Mobility Study

The City of Tyler is experiencing continuous growth, straining the existing transportation system, with no signs of stopping. Numerous developments are being planned in the South Tyler area, accelerating the need for additional transportation infrastructure. To reduce congestion and improve mobility, transportation improvements have to be prioritized to keep up with the increased demands on the roadway system.

The City of Tyler evaluated seven corridors, resulting in nine proposed projects, in an effort to address congestion, increase connectivity, and improve mobility. The purpose of the South Tyler Mobility Study is to:

• Evaluate existing and future traffic conditions.

• Identify short-term transportation improvements.

• Evaluate the feasibility of long-term transportation improvements, including new roadways.

• Prioritize long-term improvements for future roadway connectivity within the study area.

The study is funded by the Half Cent Sales Tax Fund.

Project Corridors

The City of Tyler is proposing an approximate 500-foot connection of Waljim Street from South Town Drive to Thigpen Drive, serving as a critical transportation link for drivers. This proposed project is the #1 priority roadway in the study.

• Create an alternate route to Broadway Avenue between Grande Boulevard and Cumberland Road.

• Construct a two-lane roadway with sidewalks and bike lanes.

• Provide an opportunity for on-street parking.

Waljim Street North

The City of Tyler is proposing a 0.7-mile extension of Waljim Street from Grande Boulevard to Sword Waldie Way and South Town Drive.

• Construct a two-lane roadway with sidewalks and bike lanes.

• Construct a bridge over West Mud Creek.

• Add turn lanes at intersections.

• Construct a roundabout to facilitate connectivity.

Waljim Street South

The City of Tyler is proposing a 1-mile extension of Waljim Street from Heritage Drive to Cumberland Road.

• Add a connection to Deer Ridge Lane.

Market Square Boulevard

The City of Tyler is proposing a 0.6-mile extension of Market Square Boulevard from Cumberland Road to South Broadway Avenue. This proposed project is the #2 priority roadway in the study.

New Copeland Road

The City of Tyler is proposing a 2-mile extension of New Copeland Road from Grande Boulevard to Paluxy Drive.

• Construct a bridge over Shackleford Creek.

• Install a traffic signal at Paluxy Drive.

Marsh Farm Road

The City of Tyler is proposing a 1-mile extension of Marsh Farm Road from Friedlander Way to FM 756.

Cherryhill Drive

The City of Tyler is proposing a 0.5-mile extension of Cherryhill Drive from Hidden Creek Trail to W. Cumberland Road.

The City of Tyler is proposing a 1-mile extension of Hollytree Drive from FM 2493 to Legacy Boulevard.
