2025 Structure Flooding Project
When heavy rain rolls through Tyler, the stormwater system works hard behind the scenes to keep streets clear and neighborhoods safe. Several Tyler neighborhoods are seeing major drainage improvements as the City moves forward with Reynolds & Kay, LTD, for a project to prevent structural flooding caused by undersized or outdated stormwater infrastructure.
The 2025 Structure Flooding Project, for $1.28 million, targets seven areas prone to structural flooding:
Persimmon Drive
Haverhill Drive and Old Henderson Highway
Golden Road and Black Fork Creek
Kensington Drive
Ninth Street
Princedale
Kidd Drive and Downing Street
Construction is underway across multiple locations. Drainage improvements along Golden Road and Black Fork Creek are complete. Crews continue work along Haverhill Drive and Old Henderson Highway, while drainage improvements on Kensington Drive are also complete, with new asphalt planned in the construction area as weather permits.
Princedale improvements are nearly complete and will conclude with permanent asphalt as weather permits. City staff have coordinated with contractors along Ninth Street to plan around existing utility lines, and preparations are underway for upcoming work at Persimmon Drive.
Upcoming drainage improvements on Kidd Drive and Downing Street will focus on reducing flood risk and improving stormwater capacity. On Downing Street, crews will install two new curb inlets and enlarge one existing inlet to increase drainage capacity. On Kidd Drive, two aging brick curb inlets will be removed and replaced with new, higher-capacity inlets, with two additional inlets added. All four inlets will connect to a new junction box tied into existing stormwater infrastructure along Shiloh Road. New yard drains will also be installed in areas most susceptible to flooding to help redirect stormwater away from homes and property.
While most of the work will happen underground, the benefits will be clear: fewer flood threats, safer streets, and stronger peace of mind for Tyler families.
