Lake Tyler East is one of two City-owned lakes and an important part of Tyler’s water supply system. The City is evaluating the Lake Tyler East Dam to determine which improvements should be addressed first and where future investments can have the greatest impact.

Staff identified sinkholes and signs of water leaking through or around parts of the dam and spillway. A comprehensive inspection by HDR Engineering Inc. rated the dam’s overall condition as fair to poor and identified several high-priority items. Since then, Tyler Water Utilities (TWU) has completed several repairs, including filling sinkholes and restoring parts of the dam’s drainage system.

Additional testing found areas beneath the concrete spillway that may need further attention. TWU is now completing a Risk Analysis and Prioritization Study to compare potential spillway and embankment work and determine which project should move forward first.

The goal is to protect an important part of Tyler’s water supply for years to come.
