In January 2022, a structural engineer condemned the permanent Class A burn building at the Tyler Fire Department's current training site. The current facility is too small to support a fire academy or provide continuing education for our 165 certified firefighters.
To meet growing needs, we purchased a 14.6-acre tract at 3150 Robertson Rd. for a new firetraining facility. Located in the Tyler Industrial Park, the site is strategically positioned near Tyler ISD’s Career and Technology Center, Atwood’s distribution center, and Fire Station 5, creating opportunities for regional collaboration and educational partnerships.
This new space will support multiple uses simultaneously. Phase two of the project will include a relocated maintenance garage for fire apparatus and additional training props.
The Fire Department's current training facility, located at 701 Fair Park Drive, will be decommissioned.
To date, we have added two portable burn buildings that provide hands-on training in realistic conditions. These structures allow firefighters to safely train in environments that simulate smoke, heat, and fire growth. Each building includes two chambers. One replicates a fully involved room fire, while the other shows how fires ignite and spread. These facilities are designed to simulate Class A fires, which involve everyday combustibles like wood and are common in both homes and commercial structures.
