Fire Station 2
Fire Station 2 has served Tyler firefighters since the 1970s, but the aging facility no longer provides the space and features needed to support today’s fire service. Replacing the station will create a safer, more functional workspace for firefighters, provide additional room for equipment and training, and better support the crews who respond to emergencies in this part of the community.
The existing station at 5505 Old Bullard Rd, near the intersection of Old Bullard Road and West Rieck Road, will be demolished and rebuilt on the same site. The City has also acquired the adjacent property at 420 W. Rieck Rd, which will be combined with the existing property to provide additional space for the new station.
The new Fire Station 2 is anticipated to be approximately 13,500 square feet. Plans include three apparatus bays, with at least two designed as drive-through bays, while the design team evaluates whether a fourth apparatus bay can be accommodated within the site.
The station will provide sleeping accommodations for up to 11 personnel, including firefighters, officers, and a Battalion Chief. The updated facility will include several improvements designed to support firefighter health, safety, and daily operations, including separate locker rooms and restrooms, personal protective equipment storage, a decontamination room, a self-contained breathing apparatus room, storage areas, and administrative offices.
A training room designed for approximately 32-40 people will provide space for meetings and training sessions. Living areas for crews will include an open-concept dayroom, kitchen and dining area, walk-in pantries, and a dedicated fitness room.
Site improvements will include a full-building natural gas emergency generator, secured parking for approximately 24 personnel during shift changes, visitor and ADA-accessible parking, secured fencing, and a screened dumpster enclosure. The site will also include a fire hydrant for apparatus refill operations and direct access for fire apparatus entering and leaving the station.
The design will evaluate traffic signal pre-emption at Old Bullard Road and West Rieck Road to support emergency response and will incorporate the existing underground detention facilities into the site.

Fire Station 2 is currently at this stage420 W. Rieck Road was acquired for the replacement of Fire Station 2. The City Council approved a contract with BRW Architects to design the new Fire Station 2.
