When heavy rain rolls through Tyler, the stormwater system works hard behind the scenes to keep streets clear and neighborhoods safe. Several Tyler neighborhoods have now seen major drainage improvements as the City moves forward with a project to prevent structural flooding caused by undersized or outdated stormwater infrastructure.
The Structure Flooding Project targeted seven areas prone to structural flooding:
Persimmon Drive
Haverhill Drive and Old Henderson Highway
Golden Road and Black Fork Creek
Kensington Drive
Ninth Street
Princedale
Kidd Drive and Downing Street
Drainage improvements are complete at six of the seven project areas, including Persimmon Drive, Haverhill Drive and Old Henderson Highway, Golden Road and Black Fork Creek, Kensington Drive, Ninth Street, and Princedale. In these areas, crews replaced undersized pipes, added stormwater inlets, stabilized drainage channels, and rebuilt sidewalks, driveways, and pavement as needed.
The remaining construction is taking place near Kidd Drive and Downing Street. Crews are working in the neighborhood between Shiloh Road, Kidd Drive, and Downing Street to increase drainage capacity by installing new curb inlets, replacing older inlets, connecting the system to existing stormwater infrastructure along Shiloh Road, and adding yard drains in areas more likely to flood.
While much of the work happens underground, the benefits are clear: fewer flood threats, safer streets, and stronger peace of mind for Tyler families.

The Structure Flooding Project is funded through the City’s Stormwater Utility Fund and Half Cent Sales Tax Fund.
The original drainage improvements totaled $1.28 million. The construction of Kidd Drive and Downing Street adds approximately $587,000, bringing the total investment for the project to about $1.87 million.
