Tyler Water Utilities has completed replacing the 12,000 water meters identified as inaccurate or unreliable ahead of schedule. Some of these meters, installed as far back as 2005, showed issues such as not registering water usage or failing to communicate data to the Water Business Office. The project was scheduled to be completed by December 2025.
Looking ahead, TWU will continue upgrading meters on an annual schedule, gradually replacing the remaining units with Neptune models equipped with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). These efforts are part of a long-term commitment to modernize the City's water infrastructure and provide residents with accurate, dependable service.
The new meters are Neptune models equipped with AMI, a technology that allows meters to be read remotely without requiring access to individual meter boxes. This ensures more consistent and accurate reporting, helps eliminate billing discrepancies, and improves overall customer service. These models are already in use in other Texas communities like Corsicana and Frisco and come highly recommended for their performance and reliability.
The City contracted with Core and Main and subcontractor Tex Specialty Services to complete the installations.
This project was partially funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), which allowed the City to eliminate its backlog of outdated meters. While we regularly budgets for meter replacements, this funding significantly accelerated the effort.
